PETE (short for polyethylene terephthlate, but you don’t need to remember that) is a type 1 plastic that is most commonly found in bottles for soft drinks. It’s one of the higher impact or stronger plastics.
Typical PETE Plastics:
- Plastic soft drink and water bottles
- Plastic beer bottles
- mouthwash bottles, like Lysterine
- Peanut Butter Jars
- Salad Dressing containers
there are other types of PETE, but for practible purposes this is a good and short list, easy to make adjustments in your home.
How to Recycle PETE Plastics

Like all recycling, it requires some small but highly productive changes in how you manage your own waste.
Truth be told, homewowners make the biggest difference in recycling. Having recycling bins or bags in your home in certain areas like kitchens and bathrooms help. Lots of PETE comes out of those areas, and you may have been throwing out recyclable PETE without realizing. Put 2 waste baskets in your bathroom and kitchen. One for household and foood waste, one for recyclables. Don’t worry about it too much if you are not sure which is which. The important thing is the effort, and after one trip to our recycling center you will quickly realize the difference and be on the fast track to recycling. it’s a good feeling, knowing what you do in your own home is making a difference.
